Modals with negations

Modal is een hulpwerkwoord. Dit hoofdstuk behandelen we: 

can, could & to be able to. 

Maar er zijn er meer --> should, to have to, must 

Als je - to be able to - gebruikt veranderd to be altijd naar:

am/is/are/was/were - Are you able to help me?

Are you able to understand?

Modal verbs 

Om aan te geven dat je iets kan, moet, mag, zou moeten, niet mag, niet kan etc. etc. gebruik je modale hulpwerkwoorden oftewel modal verbs. 

Een modal verb in zijn eentje komt niet voor: er volgt altijd een ander werkwoord op. Je mag IETS niet, je moet IETS. Dat IETS geef je aan door een ander werkwoord. 

Bekijk de volgende zinnen goed. 

I can swim; I learnt is when I was five years old. 

My brother and sister can play football really well 

Can you help me with this? 

I can speak four languages 

On Saturdays, I can stay up late. My parents don't mind. 

You can't park here, look at the sign, it's forbidden. 

You can't talk when the teacher is explaining things 

Wat betekenen can en can't?

1. Can = kunnen en mogen, can't is niet kunnen en niet mogen
2. Can = kunnen, can't is niet kunnen
3. Can = mogen, can't = niet mogen
4. Can = moeten, can't = niet moeten.

Lees nu deze zinnen 

You must do your homework, it is a school rule. 

We must work hard in school in order to do well. 

He must remember to buy a birthday present for his mother.

Wat betekenen must en mustn't?

2. Should betekent zou (eigenlijk) moeten, shouldn't betekent zou (eigenlijk) niet moeten
3. Should betekent zou niet moeten, shouldn't betekent zou moeten
4. Should betekent moeten, shouldn't betekent niet mogen.
