Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express possibility, necessity, permission, or ability. They are used to modify the meaning of other verbs by expressing modality—that is, likelihood (= waarschijnlijkheid), ability, permission, or obligation. Examples of modal verbs include can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.
