• Ze veranderen niet van vorm, behalve "have to".  
• Het werkwoord hierna is altijd het hele werkwoord! 

should-have to-must

Deze hulpwoorden gebruik je om te zeggen dat er iets moet gebeuren.

1. have to = het moet, het is verplicht.

2. must = als je zelf vindt dat het moet.

3. Should =advies.

Have to

Have to = verplicht.

All drivers have to stop in front of a red traffic light!

Must

I must go to bed early tonight if I want to be ready for the test tomorrow. 

Should

Should = advies

You should stop eating fast food if you want to stay healthy. 

Een modal verandert meestal niet van vorm

Have to

Dit is de enige modal die wel verandert:

can/ to be able to/ could

Can= Wanneer je iets kunt (vaardigheid), iets mogelijk is, je vraagt/geeft toestemming of je doet een verzoek. 

To be able to= alleen voor iets kunnen.

Could= verleden tijd van can, wanneer je beleefd bent, wanneer iets waarschijnlijk gaat gebeuren. 

Can

Can= Wanneer je iets kunt, iets mogelijk is, je vraagt/geeft toestemming of je doet een verzoek. 

He can run really fast.

Can I go to the bathroom?

 I cannot take my medication without water.

To be able to

To be able to= alleen voor iets kunnen.

Is he able to fix your bike?

They weren’t able to solve the problem.

I haven’t been able to do the task yet.

Could

Could= verleden tijd van can, wanneer je beleefd bent, wanneer iets waarschijnlijk gaat gebeuren. 

I could hold my breath much longer when I was younger.

Could you tell me the time?

 It could snow tomorrow.
