What is the difference between an informal and formal letter?

A non-official letter that we usually use to write to our friends, family, or relatives.

Do you have a good relationship with the person?  Then Dear + first name is fine:
Dear Alex / Hi Alex

When in doubt:
To a woman:  Dear ms Hill
To a man: Dear mr Hill

Practice informal writing
An English-speaking friend is coming to study in your town next year and has written asking for information and advice. Write a letter to your friend. In your e-mail:​

​1. You comment on your friend’s plan to come to the Netherlands.​
2. You offer to introduce him/her to your friends.​
3. You give advice about how to find a part-time job.​
4. You give information on where he/she can learn your language.​


​You should write at least 150 words. ​
