De Past Perfect Continuous maak je met het 

had gevolgd door been + een werkwoord dat eindigt in -ing.

• Had been studying
• Had been writing

When to use it? 

Je gebruikt de past perfect continuous als iets al een tijd aan de gang was en gebeurde voordat iets anders gebeurde in de verleden tijd.

Dus, iets was een tijdje aan de gang, voordat iets anders gebeurde. Let op dat tijd vaak een rol speelt. 

 example

We played tennis yesterday. Half an hour after we began playing, it started to rain. 

We had been playing for half an hour when it started to rain.

I was tired when I arrived home. I____________ all day

1. had been working
2. am working
3. have been working

When I got home, Tom was sitting in front of the TV, he had just turned it off. He_______(watch) a film

We ________ (try) to open the door for ages when Jamy came in with the key.

Susie _________ (to study) for her exams the whole night, then she went to bed.
