Grammar: reported speech

'I want to go to Harvard Business School.'

She said that she wanted to go to Harvard Business School.

'I am studying to become an account manager.'

He said (that) he was studying to become an account manager.

When we tell someone what another person said, we usually change the verb tenses from the direct speech.

Verb tenses reported speech

Present simple / past simple	'I want to go'	He said he WANTED to go
Present continuous/ past continuous	'I am studying'	She said she WAS studying.
Present perfect / past perfect	'I have worked here since 2019.'	He said he HAD WORKED here since 2019
Past simple/ Past perfect	'I went to Paris.'	She said she HAD GONE to Paris.

Reported speech: modal verbs

Direct speech	Reported speech
'I will phone the client.'	He said he WOULD phone the client.
'We must finish the project on time.'	She said(that) THEY HAD TO finish the project on time.
'I can arrange a meeting.'	He told me (that) he COULD arrange a meeting.

Reported speech - changes

- Sometimes you need to change the pronoun and the adverbs of time and place:

'We spoke earlier today.'  - He said (that) THEY had spoken earlier that day.

'I'll phone tomorrow.' - She told me (that) she would phone the next day.

now / then  ; yesterday / the day before; here/ there; this/ that

Reported questions: yes/no ..?

• Yes/ No questions - ASK = IF/ WHETHER

'Do you enjoy the work?' I asked him if he ENJOYED the work.

'Have you visited your grandma?' I asked him if/ whether he HAD VISITED his grandma.

Reported speech: WH-questions 

WH- questions: use the same question word, then change the verb tenses, pronouns and adverbs of time and place if necessary.

'What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?'

I asked him what he LIKED most about being an entrepreneur.

'Why has the business been a succes?' 

I asked him why the business HAD BEEN a succes.
