  3. Things to look out for: motivations of characters, symbolism, the deeper meaning of words and what they reveal about the characters.

Slide 10 - Open vraag

How would we go about answering this question?
A student said, ‘the writer uses language to create a sense of Nella's uncertainty and vulnerability as she arrives at her new home. Nella's observation of the canal scene reveals more about her inner turmoil than it does about the bustling city life around her.’

To what extent do you agree?
In your response you could
  • Consider Nella's internal response to the canal scene.
  • Evaluate how the writer uses language to portray Nella's inner thoughts and feelings.
  • Support your response with references to the text.
