"This is a unique situation and very important," said Duncan Agnew, a scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California. He said that the change in Earth’s rotation isn’t dangerous, but it is interesting. It shows that we are in unusual times.
Climate change is affecting how we keep time. Without global warming, we would have to remove a second from our clocks even sooner, in 2026. Dennis McCarthy, a former time director at the US Naval Observatory, said, "We are going to have a negative leap second. It’s just a question of when."
The Earth is spinning faster because its hot, liquid core behaves in different ways. Agnew explained that this core has made the Earth rotate faster for about 50 years. But the melting ice at the poles since 1990 has hidden this speed increase.
Melting ice at the North and South Poles, caused by climate change, has slowed down the Earth a little. As the ice melts and sea levels rise, it changes the Earth’s weight. This is similar to how a spinning ice skater slows down when they stretch their arms out.
Without the melting ice, we would need to take away that second in 2026 instead of 2029, according to Agnew.
