At some point hermits decided to live together in monasteries. Why?

3. To help each other resist temptation together
4. Better able to defend from the outside world

What do monks (and nuns) do all day?

1. Pray and work
2. Resist temptation to do anything

What is a precept?

1. A set of rules of how to live everywhere in the world
2. A set of rules and guidelines how the monks and nuns should live

precept can also be used in a different context than a monastry

An example of a precept is...

1. the Pirate Code (see Pirates of the Caribean)
2. The Regula Benediciti (the rules of St. Benedict)

Willibrord

The monks also ventured out to convert the heathens

Such a monk was called a missionary 

One of them was the Irish monk Willibrord 

With the protection of the Franks Willibrord went out to convert the Frisians around 700 

 In some cases he was succesful.

Boniface was English monk who attempted to convert the Frisians. He was murdered in 754 near Dokkum.

Find three reasons in the text below to convert the heathens on the continent

In 690 he travelled along with eleven followers to convert the Frisians. Missionaries believed that it was good to devote their lifes completely to God and leave their own environment and relatives behind. The Bible encouraged them to spread their faith. As Anglo-Saxons, they also felt related to the people on the continent.
