During the Golden Age Amsterdam grew into a centre of world trade. Amsterdam became a stock market (stapelmarkt)

In 1602 the VOC was founded. Which was the first.......?
This was also the first NV(naamloos vennootschap), it created a stock market. You could buy a share (aandeel), so you could own a small part of the VOC.

1.4 Absolultism: Divine Kings
How were The Netherlands governed during this time?

All the other countries were ruled by kings who wanted absolute power and very often started a war.

Louis XIV (?) was the king of France. He wanted the absolute power, this is called absolutism.  He made every decision himself, ministers were only there to advice him. But they could not make decisions.

Divine Kings
What do you think this means?
Many European kings thought their power came directly from God. They believed to be carrying out God's will.

Louis loved wars, but they were very expensive. To protect the French economy the came up with mercantilism. Taxes on imported goods were increased. So it became cheaper to buy French products, but the taxes from foreign goods filled the Treasury (staatskas) again.

Disaster!
1672 is known as the Disaster year. The Republic was attacked from three sides at once!  By France, England en two German states.

After a long struggle the Franch army was able to control parts of the Republic.

Willem III succeeded in driving the French army back, but it was over for the Dutch economy. The Netherlands fell into decline as a powerfull country.
