How to calculate by scale?

"With the scale you can calculate the "real distance"."

• Example: Scale is 1 : 100 000.
• 1 cm on the map is 100.000 cm in real.
• The scale is always in kilometres.

The scale is something different than the scale number!!

The distance between Maastricht and Delfzijl is 7,5 cm on the map.

The scale is 1 : 4 000 000.
