The Habsburgian dynasty
  • The House of Habsburg  (House of Austria) is one of the
    most important families.

  • It ruled over the Holy Roman Empire and Spain
  • Charles V becomes the leader of this dynasty in 1506

  • Thanks to his Spanish crown he also becomes the
    leader of pieces of land in the New World.

Margaret of Austria
  • Because Charles V can't govern his huge
    empire alone, he asks his aunt Margaret
    of Austria to become his viceroy.

Centralisation
  • Charles V wanted to centralise the regions.
  • For this purpose he established three councils in 1531
  1. The Secret Council --> domestic legislation.
  2. The Council of State --> foreign affairs and war issues.
  3. The Council of Finance --> finances
