Present Simple

The present simple is what we in Dutch call the tegenwoordige tijd.

You use the present simple when you talk about:

• Facts (feiten)
• Habits (gewoonten)
• Routine (met regelmaat)

Present Simple

The present simple of a verb is the entire verb without 'to'. When the subject of the sentence in 'he', 'she' or 'it', you add a '-s' to the verb

To Walk:

I walk

He walks

Present Simple exceptions 1

Als het onderwerp van de zin 'he', 'she' of 'it' is, komt achter het werkwoord een '-s'.
Er zijn echter enkele uitzonderingen.
Eindigt het hele werkwoord op '–o', dan komt er '–es' achter het werkwoord.

• I go - he goes
  ik ga - hij gaat

Eindigt het hele werkwoord al op '–s' of '-ch', dan komt er '–es' achter.
• I watch - he watches
  ik kijk - hij kijkt

Present Simple exceptions 2

Eindigt het hele werkwoord op '–y', dan wordt de '-y' vervangen door '–ies'.
• I fly - he flies
  ik vlieg - hij vliegt

Eindigt het werkwoord op '–y' met 'a', 'e', 'o', of 'u' ervoor dan komt er wel gewoon een '–s' achter het werkwoord.
• I play - he plays
  ik speel - hij speelt

Present Simple questions/negations

I walk to school -> Do I walk to school -> I don't walk to school

He walks to school -> Does he walk to school -> He doesn't walk to school
