The Passive (p. 71)
  • When to use?
    When the focus is on what happened, not on who did it.

  • Active: They take the photos.
  • Passive: The photos are taken (by them).
  • Active: I did my homework.  
  • Passive: My homework ....

Why Use Passive Voice?
To emphasize the action or result rather than the doer.
  • The bridge was completed in 2020.

    To downplay or omit the agent.(uitvoerder)
  • The vase was broken.

    To sound more formal or objective.
  • The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions.

Passive = lijdende vorm
  •  Van actieve zin naar passieve zin:
    Het lijdend voorwerp van de actieve zin wordt het onderwerp van de passieve zin.
  • Lijdend voorwerp: wie of wat + gezegde + onderwerp
    VB: A Texan company makes these NASA t-shirts

  • What does this Texan company make?
    Lijdend voorwerp is: these NASA t-shirts
  • Passive: These NASA t-shirts are made (by....)

Passive Voice Formula:
Present Simple Passive:
Subject + am/ are /is + past participle (+ optional agent introduced by "by").
Past Simple Passive:
Subject + was / were + past participle (+ optional agent introduced by "by").

Examples:
Active: The chef cooks the meal.
Passive: The meal is cooked (by the chef).

Active: She wrote a book.
Passive: A book was written (by her).

Active: They will complete the project next week.
Passive: The project will be completed next week.
