Active vs. Passive Voice

In active voice, the subject performs the action. 

Kyle drives a car

In passive voice, the subject receives the action.

The car is driven by Kyle

The object becomes the subject.

Compare and contrast active and passive voice. Provide examples.

Forming the Passive Voice

To form the passive voice, use a form of 'to be' + past participle.

 Example: The cake was baked by John.

Explain how to form the passive voice and give examples.

When to Use Passive Voice

Passive voice is often used when the doer of the action is unknown, unimportant, or should not be the focus of the sentence.

Explain the contexts in which passive voice is appropriate.

Change the sentence from active to passive: My mom is laughing at the joke.
