What are 'modals' ?

must (not)-> moeten/niet mogen. Jij vindt dat iets (niet) moet.

has to / have to-> moeten-> zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting (iets moet van iemand anders)

don't have to / doesn't have to-> niet hoeven, het is geen verplichting

should (not)-> zou moeten. Je geeft advies of raadt iets af. 

ought to-> zou moeten. Je geeft advies.

Exercise

Rewrite the sentence using the given words.

Write full answers (do not have, must not....).

Example: You are not allowed to eat here. (must not)

You must not eat here.

You are not allowed to talk during the test. (must not)

It isn't necessary to bring food. (do not have to)

I am obliged to finish this letter before midday. (have to)

It would be kind of you if you visit him in the hospital. (ought to)

It makes sense to buy the tickets right now. They might be sold out tomorrow. (should)

I used to go to my grandparents and spend there several weeks on my summer holidays.

Once I woke up in the morning and found out that my earring was missing. I searched the __________ room and found the earing just behind the bed where I was sleeping. I bent down to __________for it but couldn't move back. I was just stuck inbetween the bed and the wall. I felt ___________ and that ____________! Luckily my grandma came to ___________me and moved bed aside. This made me feel __________. but luckily I came _________out of this embarassing ___________!

Luckily my grandma came to free me and moved bed aside. This made me feel uneasy but luckily I came unscathed out of this embarassing predicament!
