Have you ever thought about... 

what if giraffes were round? then what? 

If giraffes were round instead of skinny and tall, what would/wouldn't they do?

That is a conditional

It consists of a condition (voorwaarde) and a result

If... then...

(als... dan...)

There are 4 different kinds, we will only look at 3.

the zero conditional

> gebruik je voor dingen die 100% feitelijk waar zijn 

If you heat up ice, it melts.

If plants don't get water, they die

You get purple if you mix red and blue paint.

How to make the zero conditional

Voor beide zinsdelen, (the condition and the result) 

gebruik je de present simple.

(to get up - to miss) If I get up late, I miss the bus.

(to break - to hurt)  When you break your leg, it hurts. 

If the wind blows, the trees.....

1. are moving
2. move
3. will move

The first conditional

> Gebruiken wanneer je erg zeker bent dat iets als gevolg in de toekomst zal gebeuren

If I see him tonight, I will talk to him. 

  If you break your leg, your family will come to see you. 

How to make the first conditional

voor de voorwaarde (if)  > present simple 

voor het resultaat dat ontstaat > Will +  stam van het werkwoord

(to rain - to go) If it rains, I will not go to the beach.

(to cry - to cheer up) If you cry, I will cheer you up. 

If you break up with me, I _______

1. am crying
2. cry
3. will cry

The second conditional

> gebruiken om onrealistische/onwaarschijnlijke situaties te beschrijven

If I ever moved to canada, I would buy a  moose

  If you ever won a million dollars, you would spend it on mcdonalds.  

How to make the second conditional

voor de voorwaarde (if)  > past simple 

voor het resultaat dat ontstaat > Would  +  stam van het werkwoord

(to have- to travel) If they had more time, they would travel the world

If you were the prime minister of the netherlands, you...
