If-sentences (conditionals)

Goal for today

At the end of this lesson, you will understand and know how to use if-clauses 

(= 0, 1, 2- conditional)

What are if-sentences?

FUNCTION: Conditional sentences are used to talk about what happens when a condition is met (= wanneer aan een voorwaarde voldaan wordt). 

FORM: A sentence that is made up of an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result), also called 'conditionals'.

What are if-sentences?

FORM: If this…., then that…., in 3 forms:

- If it rains, you get wet.
- If I come to London, I’ll visit you.
- If I had a million Euros, I would buy a nicer house.

Give an example of an if-sentence

Zero Conditional

• General truths 
• if + present simple, ... present simple
  Examples:
• If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
  
• If it rains, the soil gets wet

If he ___ (touch) the fire, he ___ (get) burned.

If you ___(freeze) water, it ___ (become) a solid.

First conditional

• Possible future situations
• if + present simple, ... will + full verb
  
  Example: 
  
• If it rains tomorrow, we will go to the cinema

More examples

• If you like warm weather, you will like Florida or California.
• It will take about 6 hours, if you go by plane.
  
• If you go to California, you'll go to great beaches.

I ___(send) you to the principal, if you ___ (make) trouble.

If she __ (get) good grades, she __(go) to university.

2nd conditional

• Unreal, improbable situations
• if + past simple, .... would + full verb 
  Example:
  - If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion.

If burglers __ (break) into my house, they ___ (not find) any money.

I ___ (quit) smoking, if I ___ (be) you.

• Real factual situations (0): if + pres. simple, pres. simple
  Example: If you heat ice, it melts
• Possible future actions (1st): if + pres. simple, will + full verb
  Example: If it rains, I will stay at home
• Unreal, improbable situations (2nd): if + past simple, would + full verb
  Example: If I won the lottery, I would buy a car.

Recap

The sentence can start with if, followed by the result:

- If I were you, I would buy a new pair of trousers. 

But it can also start with the result, followed by the if part:

- We will  go to the cinema, if it rains tomorrow.
