Nouns that end with a consonant + o get es.

hero > heroes

tomato > tomatoes

s, x, z, ch (s-sounds)

Nouns that end with s, x, z, ch get es.

bus > buses 

box > boxes

match > matches

f, fe 

Nouns that end with f, fe get ves.

shelf > shelves 

knife > knives

consonant + y 

Nouns that end with a consonant + y get ies.
