Slide 2 - Poll
State the distinguishing properties of solids, liquids and gases
Describe the structures of solids, liquids and gases in terms of particle separation, arrangement and motion
Describe changes of state in terms of melting, boiling, evaporating, freezing and condensing
Describe the effects of temperature and pressure on the volume of a gas

Activity A: States of Matter Properties
Using your coursebook, pages 1 to 4, study the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
Complete the table summarising the properties.
Present your output.

Solids
fixed volume and shape
high-density
The atoms vibrate in position but can’t change location.
The particles are packed very closely together in a fixed and regular pattern.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide
Liquids
fixed volume but adopt the shape of the container
less dense than solids (an exception is water) but much denser than gases
The particles move and slide past each other which is why liquids adopt the shape of the container and also why they can flow freely

Slide 10 - Tekstslide
Gases
NO fixed volume = take up the shape of the container
very low density
Since there is a lot of space between the particles, gases can be compressed into a much smaller volume.
The particles are far apart and move randomly and quickly (around 500 m/s) in all directions
They collide with each other and with the sides of the container (this is how
pressure
is created inside a can of gas).

Activity B: State Changes
Using the information in the table, make a flow diagram showing ALL the state changes.
Be creative.
Present your output.

T O D O:
Identify
two ideas
you do not understand quite well in our sessions.
Ask someone who can explain and write the explanations in your notebook.
Verify your learning from a classmate by sharing it with the teacher.
