Lesson goals

Students:

Know the difference between will, to be going to, present continuous and present simple.

4 forms

 (you should already know):

1. will+infinitive
2. to be going to + infinitive
3. present continuous
4. present simple

Form 1: Will + infinitive (= hele ww)

• Offer: I will help you with your homework.
  
• Promise: I will pick  you up; I promise!
  
• Request: Will you help me prepare for my test?
• Decision: The wedding will take place next summer.
  
• Prediction without evidence: I think our team will win the match.
  
• Expressing certainty: He'll hate working in an office all day.

Form 2: to be (am, is, are)+ going to + infinitive

- Intention/Plans already made:

I am going to visit aunt Betsy tomorrow. 

(er is een plan  en tante Betsy weet er al van kun je aannemen. Het is niet heel specifiek gepland wat betreft tijd)

- Prediction with evidence:

Look at all those clouds. It is going to rain soon.

(de donkere wolken zijn het bewijs dat je hebt)

Form 3: Present Continuous = am, is, are + ww+ ing

Plans with  actions arranged, near future:

We are having dinner at a restaurant at 6.30. (made reservations)

(hier is de reservering specifiek benoemd en je ziet dat deze echt afgesproken/gearrangeerd is in de nabije toekomt)

I am flying to Paris next week. (bought the tickets)

(je hebt al kaartjes gekocht dus echt al besproken/gearrangeerd)

Form 4: Present Simple = ww / ww+(e)s

Times according to a schedule/timetables:

- The stores close at six.

(een winkel heeft openings- en sluitingstijden, duidelijk een schema)

- The plane leaves in ten minutes.

(dit geldt ook voor vliegschema's)

TIP: strategie om antwoorden te geven.

Zet de grammatica regel van de verschillende vormen om in een vraag.

Bijv. gaat het bij een zin waar een future tense ingevuld moet worden om een schedule/timetable?

- Ja? gebruik de present simple

- Nee? gebruik geen present simple. 

Voor elke future form kun je dus een vraag stellen, zo kom je meestal tot het juiste antwoord. Denk je dat er 2 opties zijn (komt soms voor), kies dan de beste.
