The heart part 1

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

1. Read everything!

2. Examine pictures

3. Make notes!

4. Write down questions you have for me!

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Location of the heart

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

The heart
-The heart is a double pump

-right side pumps oxygen poor
  blood

-left side pumps oxygen rich
  blood

-Left and right are the other way around
Right side
Left side

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

When is blood 'deoxygenated' ?
A
when the concentration oxygen is low
B
when the concentration oxygen is high

Slide 5 - Quizvraag

Structure of the heart
The heart is a hollow muscle.

Coronary arteries (red arteries) supply Oxygen rich blood + nutrients to the heart

Coronary veins (blue veins) carry Carbon dioxide + waste products away from the heart.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Which artery brings blood to the heart?
A
Aorta
B
Coronary arteries
C
Coronary veins

Slide 7 - Quizvraag

The heart has four chambers:
- Left atrium
- Right atrium
- Left ventricle
- Right ventricle

Blood always enters the heart via the atria.

Septum: a wall separating the left and right side of the heart.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

How many chambers does the heart have?
A
2
B
4
C
6
D
8

Slide 9 - Quizvraag

Bloodflow
*Superior vena cava: Oxygen-poor blood from head + arms to right atrium

*Inferior vena cava: Oxygen-poor blood from torso + legs to right atrium

*Pulmonary veins: Oxygen-rich blood from lungs to left atrium

*Aorta: Pumps Oxygen-rich blood to rest of the body

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

The heart receives oxygen rich blood from the ...
A
Pulmonary veins
B
Pulmonary arteries
C
Coronary arteries/veins
D
Aorta

Slide 12 - Quizvraag

The heart pumps oxygen rich blood into the?
A
Superior vena cava
B
Pulmonary arteries
C
Aorta
D
Aorta and pulmonary arteries

Slide 13 - Quizvraag

When blood flows back to the heart where does it go first?
A
Into the valves
B
Into the atria
C
Into the ventricles
D
Into the septum

Slide 14 - Quizvraag

atrioventricular valves
*Atria + ventricles separated by atrioventricular valves.

*Semilunar valves keep blood from flowing back into ventricles.

As you can see, a valve only opens in one direction

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Which part of the circulatory system prevents blood from flowing back?
A
Veins
B
Arteries
C
Valves
D
Atria

The heart part 2

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

cardiac cycle
- atria contract, blood flows into
   ventricles (ventricles relaxed)

- ventricles contract, blood
   flows into aorta and pulmonary
   artery (atria relaxed)

- Heart relaxes, blood flows
   into atria
