Past continuous

Je gebruikt de past continuous om aan te geven dat je ergens mee bezig was op een bepaald moment in het verleden. Je zegt dus dat je iets aan het doen was.

Je gebruikt de past continuous dus als je wilt zeggen wat  je aan het doen was op een bepaald moment.

The detective was looking for clues. 

The investigator was taking notes.

The investigator was smoking a pipe.

The detective was hiding behind a paper.

Als een werkwoord uit 1 lettergreep bestaat met 1 klinker in het midden, verdubbelt de klinker

To swim – he was swimming

To hit – we were hitting

to get - he was getting hit

Als een werkwoord eindigt op een -e verdwijnt de -e als

je er -ing achter zet.

To have – he was having

To smoking – we were smoking

to hide - he was hiding behind

Past continuous + Past Simple

Als je ergens mee bezig was in de verleden tijd en iets anders gebeurt er tussendoor.

was of were en het ww + ing voor waar dat waar je mee bezig bent. → bv. je bent aan het tv kijken/ eten

ww + ed (of 2e rijtje van de onr ww) voor wat er

tussendoor komt - iemand belt op bv.

      Je was al tv aan het kijken op het moment dat er werd gebeld.
