Canada

Volgens de officiële teller gaat het om liefst 1864 eilanden in totaal. Het gebied heeft een geheel eigen ecosysteem en flora en fauna, met veel dennenbomen, zeldzame schildpadden en vogelsoorten.

De Thousand Islands Bridge is een internationale brug die over de Saint Lawrence rivier gaat. Hij verbindt het noordelijke deel van New York in de Verenigde Staten met het zuidoostelijke deel van Ontario in Canada. Hij is gemaakt in 1937. De bouwers voegden er onderdelen aan toe in 1959.

De Thousand Islands

De Thousand Islands zijn ontstaan tijdens de laatste ijstijd, die dateert van zo’n 10.000 jaar geleden. Zachte gedeelten land werden door erosie weggeslepen, harde gedeelten bleven overeind. 

Door overstromingen transformeerden deze zich tot talloze granieten eilandjes in de ontstane Saint Lawrence River.
