What are we going to learn today?

Two things:

- Relative pronouns

- Comparisons (revision + something new)

It's a lot but don't worry: more on this subject on friday!

Relative pronouns: who, which, whose, (that)

Gebruik je om te verwijzen naar mensen/dieren/dingen.

Eerst: who, which en whose.

Relative pronouns: who, which, whose, (that)

Voorbeeld:

                That man who visited my birthday is my father.

Je gebruikt "who" omdat je verwijst naar that man.

Let op! Je verwijst dus niet naar "my birthday"

Tip: probeer voor jezelf aan te wijzen waar je precies naar verwijst in de zin.

This is the car which I bought in 2015. ----> je verwijst dus naar "the car" en niet naar "I"

Johnny, whose mother is an actress, loves to dance as well. --> verwijst naar "Johnny" niet "mother"

She's the teacher____teaches us English.

Je mag who/which wel vervangen door that op het moment dat je de bijzin niet weg kan laten omdat de zin anders gek wordt of je informatie mist. 

Tom, who is a musician, loves going to concerts.

--> weglaten

Tom loves going to concerts.

--> is de zin nog logisch? Is de bijzin alleen maar gevuld met extra info? Dan mag je niet vervangen!

That’s the man who gave me directions. 

--> weglaten

That's the man.

--> de man die wat??? De zin is niet meer logisch. Dan mag je wel vervangen!

That's the man that gave me directions.

In which sentence can the "who" be replaced by "that"?

When in doubt: choose who or which instead of that.

Comparisons

Om mensen, dieren en dingen met elkaar te kunnen vergelijken.

Je hebt hierin vier onderdelen:
 

1. -er / -est

2. more en most

3. Onregelmatige vormen

4. (not) as ... as --> friday

Comparisons

• Bij één lettergreep
  
• Bij twee lettergrepen die eindigen in een medeklinker +-y (easy - easier)

• Je voegt -er toe aan een woord om te zeggen dat iets <....groter....> is dan iets anders.
  (let hierbij op het woordje "than").
• Je voegt -est toe aan een woord om te zeggen dat het het <....grootst....> is. 

 (the) -er/-est (than)

Bij woorden van twee of meer lettergrepen  (behalve woorden die eindigen in een medeklinker +-y) gebruik je:

• more (than) 
• (the) most 

This engine is more powerful than the last one

That is the most interesting film ever. 

Don't forget "the" and "than"!!!!
