• Two groups opposed each other: nationalists and socialists.
• The nationalists, formed squads that fought opponents in the streets.
• The socialists organized strikes and riots.

• In this chaos, Mussolini presented himself as the strong man
  who would save the country.
• Fascism: --> anti-democratic, violent and extremely nationalistic but also totalitarian.
• --> the government had to completely
  rule over society.
• The country had to be led by one
  powerful leader, Il Duce.
