Habits and repeated actions:

Present Continuous

Is happening now:

Happening around now:

If it is not finished or you talk about the result
Signal words: for/since/already/yet/ever/never

My sister has lived there since 2001.
Tom has broken some of his fingers on holiday, he still can’t write… (result)
Have you seen Tom today?

If it is an action or if you want to emphasise that it took a long time  use the continuous:
Sam's been learning Greek since June. (action, something you are doing)
We've been looking for you all morning. (it took long!)
