Verb + to + infinitive (p171)
Certain verbs are often followed by to + infinitive(base form of the verb)  of another verb.
deserve       expect      hope        manage      offer
promise                    refuse              threaten        want

 My teacher offered to help me with the grammar test.

Verb + ing form
Certain verbs are only followed by the -ing form of another verb
Verbs that convey likes and dislikes, (needs/wants) : 
Your bedroom needs cleaning before Grandma arrives tomorrow.
Verbs that convey the idea of saying something: 
He suggested going by plane to save time.

Verb + infinitive / ing form
Some common verbs can be followed by an infinitive or an -ing form ( this can change the meaning of the sentence)
Remember:Did you remember eating at that great restaurant ?
(= remember doing something in the past)
Please remember to buy cat food when you are at the shop ( = remember to do something in the future)

Read over the 'use of English' sections carefully in each unit.
