Part 1
Present Simple

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

The present Simple

When and why should we use the Present Simple?
The present simple is used for a gewoonte (routine) or a fact (habits) or if something is (not) regularly.
In the regular case we mostly see these type of words:
 usually, often, always, never, sometimes
Example : I always go to school by bike.

How does it work?
I, you, we -> infinitive (hele werkwoord)
He , she and It -> The infinitive +s (es) --> SHIT

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

! IMPORTANT
SHIT RULE
if you see HE / SHE / OR IT
YOU ALWAYS NEED TO GET AN S or (es) with your verb!
Example: He tries soccer.
She makes cherry pie.

Questions Present Simple

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Making questions 2.1

There are two ways to form a question in the present simple.

Rule 1: With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you place the verb at the beginning of the sentence.

Examples:

Are you our teacher miss Koolwijk?

Can you tell what is the time?

May I go to the toilet?

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Making questions 2.2

Rule 2: With any other (main) verb, you add an extra verb to the beginning of the sentence: to do (do or does). The main verb changes to the infinitive.
Example:

Do you like swimming?

Does he want to play the piano?

Do they do their homework?

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Negative sentences

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Negative (1)
You place to do + not after the subject.

You put infinitive form of the (main) verb after to do + not

You use do not or the short form don't with I, you, we and they. You use does not or the short form doesn't with he, she and it.
Example:
I do not create a ship.

He doesn't do his homework.

They don't listen to miss Koolwijk.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

What about may can be and will?

With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you add the word not after the verb.

Note! Can + not is written as one word: cannot. Is not, are not and cannot can be shortened to isn't, aren't and can't. The short form of will not is won't.

Examples:

1. Jackson will not go to school  tomorrow.

2. You cannot write this to mister van Geest!

3. She isn't here yet.

Part 2
Word order

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

In an English sentence, words are placed in a certain order. A positive sentence usually has:
Subject (who)
Verb (does)
Object (what)
Place (where)
Time (when).

A sentence does not always have all the elements.
Example: Jack does his homework at school tomorrow.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Put the following items into the correct order:

study / at my house / Jason and Jack / next week.

Slide 15 - Open vraag

Extra information! (1)
Adverbials of place are added to a sentence to explain where something is taking place. In most cases, this part of the sentence is placed after the object or after the main verb.
Example: I like having PE outside.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Extra information (2)
Adverbials of time are added to a sentence to explain when something is taking place. In most cases, this part of the sentence is placed after the object or after the main verb.
Example: We will study tonight.
In most cases place comes before time.
