We will form groups.
As a group you must come to a position on the following issues. Answer not from your personal beliefs, but based on how you think people in your social group would respond.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Election of 1860: issues
I. Should slavery be allowed in the Southern states where it currently exists? Why or why not?
II. Should slavery be allowed in the Western territories? Why or why not?
III. Should the U.S. government begin giving "homesteads" to people who are willing to work the land themselves? Why or why not?
IV. Should tariffs on imported goods be increased? Why or why not?
 V. Should the United States government use tax money to support the building of railroads across the country?

List the issues that your group feels most strongly about. Come up with tentative positions on each of these issues.

Take a minute to decide what questions to ask the different social groups in the upcoming campaign session.

Don't feel that you need to be sure at this stage. Remember that you'll be meeting with each group and will be able to change positions afterward.

We will divide the groups again, this time in the five different categories. Have a civil conversation about your group's stance on these political issues.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Take a moment to write down the following

Your name and social group
The candidate you'd be voting for and why
The candidates (3) you are not voting for and why
