English as a World Language - Don't take things too literally
Many misunderstandings between English speakers and Dutch speakers come from wrong, literal translations. If you say ‘Er is geen bal op de tv’ to a Dutch person, he will understand what you mean. If you say ‘there is no ball on TV’ to an Englishman, he will think you mean an actual, round ball. Always be aware of which words and expressions you can translate literally, and which ones have a completely different translation in English.
