Future tense

Goals 

At the end of the lesson you can:

- Recognise forms of the future tense.

- You can use the forms of the future tense.

4 forms

We are going to start with the four forms you should already know:

- will+infinitive

-to be going to + infinitive

-present continuous

-present simple

Will + infinitive (= hele ww)

• Offer: I will help you with your homework.
  
• Promise: I will pick  you up; I promise!
  
• Request: Will you help me prepare for my test?
• Decision: The wedding will take place next summer.
  
• Prediction without evidence: I think our team will win the match.
  
• Expressing certainty: He'll hate working in an office all day.

to be (am, is, are)+ going to + infinitive

- Intention/Plans already made:

I am going to visit aunt Betsy tomorrow.

- Prediction with evidence:

Look at all those clouds. It is going to rain soon.

Present Continuous = am, is, are + ww+ ing

Plans with evidence:

We are having dinner at a restaurant at 6.30. (made reservations)

I am flying to Paris next week. (bought the tickets)

Present Simple ww / ww+(e)s

Times according to a schedule/timetables:

The stores closes at six.

The plane leaves in ten minutes.

Three new forms

Three new forms:

- future continuous (will be + ww+ing)

- future perfect (will have + ww+ed/third row)

- future perfect continuous (will have been + ww+ing)

Future continuous

* Actions in progress in the future: We'll be interviewing candidates all afternoon.

* Planned future events: The students will be having a big party at the end of term.

* Assumptions about something that is happening now: Don't call Luke - he'll be doing his homework now.

Future perfect

Actions completed before a certain time in the future:

Call me around seven. I'll have finished dinner by then.

By the end of the  week they will have finished the assignment

Help words; 'by the time', 'by then', by 12.00' etc,

Future perfect continuous

Actions during a period up to a specified time in the future: Longer actions

By the time I leave school, I will have been learning English for fifteen years!

Help words; 'for + a length of time'
