At the end of this lesson...

Give an example: 1) direct speech, 2) indirect/ reported speech

Reported speech: other changes in the sentence (besides the verb)

This > that                       tomorrow > the next day 

Now > then                     ten minutes ago > ten minutes before

These > those                next week > the next/following week 

Today > that day           last week > the week before 

Here > there                   A week ago > a week before

                                             Yesterday > the day before

Reported speech &

Reported speech: present tense

We use reporting verbs like 'say' or 'tell'. If this verb is in the present tense, it's easy. We just use 'she says' and then the sentence. 

Direct speech: She says: "I like ice cream."

Reported speech:  She says she likes ice cream. 

Reported speech: past tense

On the other hand, if the reporting verb is in the past tense, then usually we change the tenses in the reported speech: 

Direct speech: "I like ice cream," she said.

Reported speech: She said she liked ice cream. 

Direct speech: "We are watching TV," they said.

Reported speech: They said they were watching TV.

Direct Speech

Present simple:                                      >>>>>>>>

‘I am waiting for the bus.’

He said, 'They left for London last week.'

Indirect / reported speech

Past Simple: 

John told me (that) he knew where she was.

Past continuous:

She told me she was waiting for the bus.

Past perfect:

He said (that) they had left for London the  week before. 

Past perfect:

Mother said that Mary had lost her bracelet. 

Past Future:

Mr Darcy said that he would conquer that. 

Reported speech: exceptions

Exceptions: 

1. Something is still true > present tense: 

- He said he can't swim. 

2. Something was just said/announced > present tense: 

- 'That was Annie on the phone. She says she's not coming.'

3. 'Must' in the past tense (you can use 'must' or 'had to')

- He told me he must go to school / He told me he had to go to school.

"My mother is taking the bus to work tomorrow".
He told me that his mother ________ the bus to work the next day.

1. is taking
2. was taking
3. will take

Julie: "I want to go out."

1. Julie said that I want to go out
2. Julie said that she wants to go out.
3. Julie said that she wanted to go out.
4. Julie said that she had wanted to go out.

My cousins: "We worked all night."

1. My cousins said that we worked all night.
2. My cousins said they had worked all night.
3. My cousins said they worked all night.

Peter said to John: "Why are you so late?"

1. Peter asked to John why he so late was
2. Peter asked John how late he was
3. Peter asked John when he was late
4. Peter asked John why he was so late

Jim said, "I work here every day."

1. Jim said that he works here every day."
2. Jim said that he works there every day."
3. Jim said that he worked here everyday."
4. Jim said that he worked there everyday."

"He will come tomorrow".
