          The hamburger model (pg 26)
  • The first sentence of your body paragraph should be the idea that you want to dicuss within that same paragraph --> the topic sentence
  • Use it as a guide in writing your succeeding sentences. 
  • Avoid drifting away from your topic sentence, stick to the point. Make sure that you write only what needs to be written. 
  • Avoid cluttering your sentences with unnecessary words and phrases and skip any irrelevant information
  • The supporting sentences provide examples and/or evidence and provide specific information. 
  • The conclusion sentence reinforces the claim made in the topic sentence.

Choose two main things to write about e.g: the plot, the actors, the music, the setting.

Write two paragaphs using the hamburger layout.

Poster collage: Cut out pictures, words, phrases, and quotes from magazines to create a collage that represents you.
Acrostic poem: Write each letter of your first and last name vertically on paper. Then write a word that begins with each letter to describe yourself.
Alphabet book: Write a word that describes you for each letter of the alphabet (A: artistic, B: beautiful, C: craves chocolate, D: dancer, E: enthusiastic reader, and so on).
Poetry: Write a poem about yourself.
Music: Write an original song or find a song that represents you, and write about why it is an appropriate choice.
Autobiography: Write your life story or choose one moment to explore.
Self-portrait: Draw a picture of yourself; include details that tell who you are.

Previous lesson: Think of a topic that you will use to practice writing an essay throughout this booklet and this period. Come up with a good thesis statement and write an introduction. Make sure to grab the reader’s attention and to end your introduction with your thesis statement. (Example topics: Human cloning, death penalty, violence in video games, School uniforms, Abortion, Euthanasia)
