Direct: 
-Mark said: " I did not lie about Pieter, I just got no active memory on it." 
- The boss was angry and shouted: " Why is Thijs Late, again?!" 
- Erik ten Hag told the press: " It was a difficult year, but we still managed to be the champion of the Netherlands"

Indirect:
- Mark had no active memory on the matter and did not lie about Pieter.
- The boss shouted angrily because Thijs was Late again.
- Although it was a difficult year, Erik ten Hag and his team became champions of the Netherlands

Direct speech is used when you report on what someone actually said. Stands out because of the quotation marks.

Indirect speech is used while describing something someone says, using NO quotation marks.
