Significance of cities
  • Growth of trade > cities became richer.
  • They wanted more self-governance > city rights.
  • Feudal system > they had to convince their landlords (vassals).

City rights
  • Cities started paying taxes in exchange for privileges.
  • Special rights: markets, city wall, etc.
  • Sometimes they received a city charter: special contract with city rights.
  • This meant self-governance.

Self-government

  • Allowed to create their own laws.
  • Schepenen made laws, kept the city safe and more (policeman with more power).

  • City governance: Schout and Schepenen
  • City people: not serfs anymore. They were free.
  • If you were in the city for 1 year and 1 day, you could become burghers.
  • There were loads of differences between burghers.
Burghers = burgers.

Count Floris V
  • Count of Holland and Zeeland (the Netherlands had regions it was not a united country).
  • Peasants :) > he gave swamp that they could turn into farmland (ontginnen).
  • Nobles felt like they were losing power. They didn't like Floris.

Fighting for power
  • West-Frisians couldn't be conquered. He gave the local peasants many privileges. Landlords were mad.
  • Floris worked together with cities and peasants against landlords and nobles.

  • 1296: he was captured by landlords and imprisoned in the Muiderslot.
  • They later tried to move him, but he was killed.
