A: 'I went to the gym yesterday.'

B: 'Did you?'

Why did speaker B ask this? 

Reply questions

You use them when you want to show interest in what someone is saying and you want them to share more details.

A: ‘They aren’t going to class today.’

B: ‘Aren’t they?’

We can assume that speaker B expects speaker A to explain why.
