Unit 6: England: Oxbridge

Introduction 

In this lesson, you are going find out what Oxbridge is and you are going to look at the origin of it. 

At the end of this lesson, you can:

• Explain where the therm Oxbride comes from.
• List 3 'Did you know' facts about Oxbridge. 
• Use vocabulary words to describe events that are related to Oxbridge.

Lesson planning

• What comes to mind when you hear the word: Oxbridge?
• Word association game.
• Go to page 233 and read the 'Did you know?' square.
• Go to pp 134-235 and read the texts: 'Oxford and Cambridge' and What makes 'Oxford and Cambridge special?'
• Make short 'did you know' facts in teams.
• Present in teams.

Open your notebook and answer the following questions in pairs:

Note: It's okay if you don't know the answer; you'll learn more about this topic.

1. What associations come to mind when using Oxbridge? 
2. What does Oxbridge have to do with the UK?
3. Do you already know an additional fact about Oxbridge?

• Read through 1/6 of the vocabulary list.
• Find the Dutch translation for each word in your vocabulary list.

Play in pairs

• For the first round: start with the word 'to be founded'
• Associate a word related to 'to be founded' -> 'background'
• The next person must come up with a new word that is associated with the previous word. 
• Scoring: 1 point for every correct and relevant association
• Round 2: one person starts with a new word from the list
• The other person comes up with an association, and so on

• Find out what the most important facts are about Oxbridge
• Go to page 233 and read the 'Did you know?' square.
• Find out what the most important facts are about Oxbridge
• Next:                       read the  text again and note down:

1. Historical fact about Oxbridge
2. What is the connection between the two universities? 

Oxford and Cambridge

Go to pp 134-235 and read the texts:

1. 'Oxford and Cambridge' 
2. And What makes 'Oxford and Cambridge special?'

Scan the texts again and use the 'did you know' text as well

1. Create a timeline in your notebook
2. Document information that is relevant to both universities. 

Categories you can add to your timeline: 

1. Founding dates.

2.Famous allumi.

Write down important dates in the history of Oxford and Cambridge and briefly describe what happened.  Write dates in full. Minimum 3.

Look at the notes you made at the start of this lesson in pairs, about:
'What comes to mind when you hear the term 'Oxbridge'.

Write one sentence in your notebook about something you have learned or found interesting about 'Oxbridge'.

• What’s still unclear or interesting to explore further?
