• When you say that someone else said something in the past

• Friend: "You have a nice car!" (d.s.)
  
• My friend said that I had a nice car. (i.s.)

Grammar 1: indirect speech

• How do you write a sentence in indirect speech?

1. Your indirect speech sentence should look like this: 
   name/personal pronoun + said/told (that) + what was said
2. Look at the original sentence. Which tense is it written in?
3. Now that you know the tense, which tense should you use for the indirect speech sentence?

Present Simple                                >

"You have a nice car."

Present Continuous                      >

She: "I am going home."

Present Perfect                               >

"We have lived here since 1989."

Past Simple                                       >

Neighbours: "We moved last year."

Past Simple 

He said that I had a nice car.

Past Continuous

"She said that she was going home."

Past Perfect 

They said that they had lived here since 1989."

Past Perfect

The neighbours said that they had moved last year.

Tom said: "I want to visit my friends this weekend."

1. Tom said he wants to visit his friends this weekend.
2. Tom said he wanted to visit his friends this weekend.

Jerry said: "I am studying English a lot at the moment."

1. Jerry said he had studied English a lot at the moment.
2. Jerry said he was studying English a lot at the moment.

They said: "We have lived here for a long time."

1. They said that they have lived here for a long time.
2. They said that they had lived here for a long time.

He asked me: "Have you finished reading the newspaper?"

1. He asked me if I had finished reading the newspaper.
2. He asked me if I finished reading the newspaper.

"I get up every morning at seven o'clock", Peter said.

1. Peter said he got up every morning at seven o'clock.
2. Peter said he had got up every morning at seven o'clock.
