Algemene waarheden & feiten

2x present simple:

The door opens if you press this button. 

If you heat ice, it melts.

If it rains the grass gets wet.

If-zin in de present simple?

Dan gebruik je will + hele werkwoord in de hoofdzin:

If you leave now, you will not (won't) be late .

If you invite them, they will come.

If you don't hurry you will miss the train.

If-zin in de past simple?

Dan gebruik je would + hele werkwoord in de hoofdzin:

If I had enough money, I would help you.

If you went to bed earlier you would not be so tired.

If it rained you would get wet.

Informatie in if-zin feitelijk niet waar? 

Dan gebruik je voor de vertaling van 'zijn' were voor alle personen:

I would buy it if I were you. 

If I were a boy even just for a day ...(liedje Beyoncé)

Andere hulpwerkwoorden

Je kunt in de hoofdzin ook andere hulpwerkwoorden dan 'would' gebruiken (should, can etc.), maar dit hangt af van de betekenis.
