Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord zegt iets over het zelfstandig naamwoord.

The green car.

green = bijvoeglijk naamwoord
car = zelfstandig naamwoord (de, het, een voor zetten).

Uitzonderingen bijv. nw.

sommige werkwoorden (ww.) beschrijven hoe iets of iemand is of lijkt. Dit zijn koppelwerkwoorden, zoals bijvoorbeeld to be, become en appear, maar ook taste, look, sound, smell en feel (de zintuigen). In dit geval staat het bn. achter het ww.

Adverb = bijwoord

- bijwoord zegt iets over het werkwoord

Het bw. is een bn. met -ly op het eind. Uitzonderingen:

• medeklinker +le wordt -ly   simple → simply 
• medeklinker +y wordt -ily    happy → happily
• -ic wordt -ically (spreek uit als icly)  basic → basically
• good wordt well  This is a good car; it performs well.
• hard, fair, high, late, deep en fast veranderen niet!
• hardly, fairly, highly, lately, en deeply bestaan wel, maar betekenen heel iets anders
