Future tenses 

This aim of this lesson is to help you understand and use the future tenses.

There are 6 ways of making sentences that speak of the future:

• simple future
• present continous
• present simple
• future continuous
• future perfect
• future perfect continuous

Simple future

will + verb / to be going to + verb:   I will call you later /  It's is going to snow tonight.

2) to be going to + verb:

• toekomstplannen die binnenkort gebeuren - I'm going to help Dad in the garden this afternoon.
• voornemens - James says he is going to work harder
• voorspellingen gebaseerd op feiten of gebeurtenissen in het heden - It's going to snow tonight

1) will + verb:

 

• toekomstige plannen - I will call you later
• vaststaande gebeurtenissen in de toekomst - Dad will meet you at the airport.
• voorspellingen gebaseerd op algemene overtuigingen - Touristic space travel will soon become possible.
• aanbod of belofte - I will do my homework tonight Mum.

Future continuous

will + be + verb & -ing: Tom will be sharing an office with Francesca in the future.

• een actie die in de toekomst afspeelt en een bepaalde tijdsduur heeft: This time next week I will be skiing in Austria.
• om zekerheid aan te geven wanneer we vooruitdenken naar een bepaald moment in de toekomst: Tom will be sharing an office with Francesca in the future.

I haven't made up my mind yet. I think I .... ...(find) something nice in my mum's wardrobe.

1. will be finding
2. will find

This time in 2 weeks I ........... (enjoy) the holidays.

1. will be enjoying
2. am going to enjoy

At 11 p.m. I .......... (sleep).

1. will be sleeping
2. will sleep

You should recognise her easily. She .........(wear) a red skirt.

1. will be wearing
2. is going to wear

Future perfect

will + have + past participle (worked/given): I will have worked in England by this time next year.

Deze tijd verwijst naar een moment in de toekomst waar iets met zekerheid gebeurd zal zijn, maar op dit moment is dat nog niet zo. 

Oftewel, het gaat hier om een actie/handeling die in de toekomst afgerond is (maar nu dus nog niet). Er staat meestal een tijdsaanduiding bij.

• The teachers will have marked the exams by next week.
• I will have finished this book by the end of the day.

By the time you arrive, she ...... (go).

1. will go
2. will be going
3. will have gone

Don't phone me between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. I ..........(work).

1. will work
2. will be working
3. will have worked

I ........(tell) you everything when I go back.

1. will tell

Next month we ...... (be married) for 25 years.

1. will be married

3. will have been married

Future perfect continuous

will + have + been + verb & -ing:  Next year September, I will have been working at this school for 3 years

Deze tijd gebruik je om aan te geven dat een actie/handeling tot een specifiek tijdstip in de toekomst zal duren (en daarna afgerond is). Hierbij leg je de nadruk op lengte van de handeling.

- By the end of this school year you will have studying English for 4 years.

- They will have been screaming for hours when Harry Styles starts singing.

This summer, I ...... (live) in Brighton for four years.

1. will live
2. will be living
3. will have lived
4. will have been living

It ..... (snow) in Brighton tomorrow evening

1. will snow
2. will be snowing
3. will have snowed
4. will have been snowing

By the time we get home, they ...... (play) football for 30 minutes.

1. will play

Do you think the teacher ..... (mark) our homework by Monday morning?

1. will mark

But wait! There are 2 more tenses

We kunnen ook nog een present continuous of present simple gebruiken om over de toekomst te praten, maar dit is wel voor specifieke dingen. Kijk maar eens goed 

naar de volgende slides.

Present continuous

to be + verb & -ing: I am having a meeting at two o'clock

Er zijn 2 momenten waarop de present continuous gebruikt wordt om over de toekomst te praten:

• aanstaande toekomstige gebeurtenissen - I am having a meeting at two o'clock.
• vaststaande overeenkomsten/regelingen - Johnny's starting school next September.

Present simple

full verb/ verb + -s (he/she/it):  The new pool is due to open in April.

Er zijn 3 momenten waarop de present simple gebruikt kan worden om over de toekomst te praten:

• gebeurtenissen die gaan volgens een schema of vaststaan voor een bepaalde datum - The plane leaves at 10:45. (It is now 08:15).
• toekomstige plannen/voornemens - NASA plans to send more rockets to Mars.
• definitieve (dus onveranderbare) geplande gebeurtenissen - The new pool is due to open in April.

Paul ...... (fly) to London on Monday morning.

1. is flying
2. will have flown
3. flies

We ....... (have) dinner at a seaside restaurant on Sunday.

1. will have been having
2. are going to have
3. will have had

The baby should be due soon, next week she ...... (to be) pregnant for nine months.

1. will be
2. is
3. will have been

This time next week I .... (ski) in Switzerland!

1. will have skied
2. will be skiing
3. will ski
