So why is this information important?
  • The Netherlands was part of the Spanish empire.
  • The Dutch revolt against the Spanish King because of freedom of religion and the right to govern themselves. 
  • In 1581 the Dutch rejected the Spanish King.
  • In 1588 declared themselves a republic.

Government of the Republic
  • Every province had it's own government. They were called the Provincial States.
  • The men that were members of the Provincial States were called regents.
  • The Provincial States send representatives (regents) to the States General. They made discisions concerning war and international trade.

  • Wrong! There are some other major players in the Dutch Republic.
  • Read "money is power" and "grand pensionary..." on page 8 and 9 and give me the two important functions, and the name of those men.
