So why is this information important?
The Netherlands was part of the Spanish empire.
The Dutch revolt against the Spanish King because of freedom of religion and the right to govern themselves.
In 1581 the Dutch rejected the Spanish King.
In 1588 declared themselves a republic.

Every province had it's own government. They were called the
Provincial States

The men that were members of the Provincial States were called
regents
.
The Provincial States send
representatives
(regents) to the States General. They made discisions concerning war and international trade.
