Past Simple

You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished.

The past simple is what we call in Dutch: de verleden tijd

When do you use the past simple?

Als het in het verleden is begonnen en het is afgelopen.

Er staan (vaak) signaalwoorden in de zin, zoals:

 'yesterday', 'last week', 'this morning', 'last year', 'when I was little', 'in 2001',          'a month ago' etc.

We watched  a film on Netflix yesterday evening.
I helped my friend with  his homework last night.

We studied very hard for the test

Past Simple - Regular Verbs

Bij  een  regular verb zet je '-ed' achter het werkwoord

I walk -> I walked

He walks -> He walked

They walk -> They walked

Past Simple - Regular verbs

Spelling:
Bij medeklinker + -y, dan verandert de -y in -ie:  carry -->  carried

Maar, bij klinker + -y:  play -->  playels een werkwoord eindigt op -e, dan alleen een -d achter: live -  lived

Laatste medeklinker verdubbeld als er één klinker voor staat: drop - dropped

Vragend + ontkennend  maken in de past simple

 met regelmatige werkwoorden.

Vragend: Did + hele werkwoord (dus zonder ed!!)

vb: He stayed at home. --> Did he stay at home?

Ontkennend: didn't + hele werkwoord (dus zonder ed!!

vb: He stayed at home. --> He didn't  stay at home?

Vragend + ontkennend maken in de past simple

 met onregelmatige werkwoorden

Vragend: Did + hele werkwoord (1e rij!!)

vb.: He went  home. --> Did he go home? (go - went -  gone)

vb.: He went home. --> He didn't go home? (go - went - gone)

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

De lijst met onregelmatige werkwoorden staat achterin je boek op p 270. Die moet je uit je hoofd leren.

to write -> wrote;--> I wrote her a letter last week.

to go -> went; -->He went to Italy last year.

to catch -> caught: -->The police caught the thief two days ago.

Let op: de verleden tijd van to be heeft 2 vormen:

Vragend maken met  was/werewas/were

Vragend + ontkennend maken  doe je hetzelfde  als in het Nederlands:

Bij een vraag zet je was/were vooraan in de zin:

He was very funny.  --> Was he very funny?

They were in Spain last year. -->Were they in Spain last year?

ontkennend maken met was/were

Als je een ontkenning wilt maken met was of were zet je er NOT achter. Meestal verkort: N'T

He was late.                                 They were very happy.

He was not late.                        They were not very happy.

He wasn't late.                           They weren't very happy.
