Alternatives to If (writing)

As long as/provided that = usually 1st conditional (making deals)

Imagine/suppose = usually 2nd conditional (imaginary situations)

Unless = 1st & 2nd, means "if not"

Otherwise = 1st conditional (warning what will happen if the condition isn't met)

Fill in an alternative to if:
......you take your mobile phone, I can phone you.

Participle clauses

In participle clauses, we use the -ing form to combine two clauses with the same subject.

We can use it to talk about two events that happen(ed) at the same time.

• Looking out across the sea, I couldn't imagine a more beautiful view.
  

Participle clauses

We can use it to talk about an action that happened before another action in the sentence.

• Having paid the bill, we left the hotel.
• Form: having + past participle
  

NOTE: The subject of both clauses must be the same.

Looking up in the sky, the moon was beautiful. (= The moon looked up at the sky.)

Looking up in the sky, I noticed how beautiful the moon was.

Make this into a sentence with a participle clause: "I brushed my teeth and then went to bed."

If Sheila studied more,

1. she could still make it.
2. she will still make it.
3. she could have still made it.
4. she can still make it.

2nd conditional

Unlikely/unreal/imaginative situation in the present.

Wish/if only

We use them to talk about regrets - things we would like to change in our past or present.

Present regrets:

You use wish/if only with a past simple tense to talk about regrets in the present:

- I wish I knew what do to!

- If only we didn't live so far away.

Wish/if only

Past regrets:

You use wish/if only with a past perfect tense to talk about regrets in the present (remember the 3rd conditional?):

- I wish I hadn't eaten that entire chocolate bunny. Now I felt so sick all morning.

- If only I had known you were coming! I would have make cake.

Wish/if only + would

We use wish + would to talk about something in the present we would like to change - usually something that annoys us.

We use: wish ...... + would & full verb

- I wish you wouldn't borrow my clothes without asking!

- Mum wishes it would rain because the garden really needs some water.

We only use wish + would to talk about things that cannot be changed.

I’m starving. I wish I _______ breakfast this morning.

1. would have eaten
2. would eat
3. ate
4. had eaten

I feel really unhappy! If only I _____
this job last year.

1. didn't accept
2. wouldn't accept
3. hadn't accepted
