Robowars Sydney
Every August, the city of Sydney comes alive during Vivid Sydney – Sydney’s largest outdoor art and lifestyle festival. The whole city centre is full of activities. One of these activities is Robowars. I’ve been to Robowars many times. It’s great! So let me tell you all about it.

Robowars Sydney
Robowars has been part of Vivid Sydney since 2006 and it’s attracting more visitors every year. It is very successful because anyone with a few technical skills can join in. Many teams will bring their mechanical soldiers to town. The robots battle it out for two full days of robotic destruction and honour. Robowars is free to attend for audience and contestants alike. The event is completely crowdfunded, which means that it asks the public to donate money with which the event can be organised.

This year’s favourite robots include some very weird machines. The first is ‘BuzzSaw II’, a set of wheels with a circular saw. The BuzzSaw team is glad that the audience stays far away from the robots, because their robot ‘is ridiculously dangerous’. BuzzSaw can cut its opponent into bits easily. The second favourite is a robot known as ‘?’ (yeah, it’s just a question mark). It is a moving car tyre with an axe fixed to it. To be honest it looks like a pile of rubbish from someone’s garage, but it is supposedly super effective. The third favourite is ‘Farmboy’, which looks like a tiny tank with a movable pitchfork. It’s designed to ram and push over any opponent, but the designer also uses it to clean out his stables. Talk about multifunctional!

Many people love Robowars. This year you can expect more robots with hammers, flamethrowers, circular saws and many other crazy power tools. Each round consists of three minutes of using these weapons on each other. Aside from the matches, a few of the teams will show you how to build a battle robot yourself. And there’s a new activity this year: you can now use older robots to compete in matches yourself. But these older robots are the ones that were beaten in previous years. There are no guarantees they still work. Competing in a match will cost you 5 Australian dollars per round. As for me, I hope to see lots of robots, lots of smoke, and a lot of damage.
