  • Russia becomes a Republic (February Revolution) with a Duma (Parliament)
  • Tsar Nicholas steps down as Emperor (and was later murdered)
  • Soviets (councils) were formed by workers and soldiers
  • Russia falls into chaos
  • Bolsheviks come out as winners

Lenin and communism

  • Lenin returns to Russia (with help from the Germans)
  • He is a believer in communism and his followers are called Bolsheviks
  • The Bolsheviks promise peace, land and bread
