What do you know about South Africa?

Be aware that:

This chapter is about different population groups. 

The book uses terms as 'white', 'black', and 'mixed race'. 

Those terms are used to talk about different groups, it is NOT meant in a racistic way!

South Africa has 5 different climates:

- sea climate with dry winters

- sea climate with precipitation throughout the year (savannah)

- steppe climate 

- desert climate

- Mediterranean climate

South Africa is a rainbow nation:

- eleven official languages

- Dutch influences because of colonialism

(mixed-race people, Afrikaans)

- Asians, they worked on plantations

Apartheid started when South Africa was a settlement colony. 

White people were afraid that the blacks would seize power --> 

laws to separate those groups, based on race

The black population had to live in homelands, that was an other area then townships. 

Groups who live seperately = segregation
