CHINA UNTIL 1980

- all companies are state-owned
- no freedom for the people
- no western influences
- population: poor and cut off from the outside world

             "Locked country"
CHINA NOW

- still one-party system
- international companies are welcome
- Chinese (tech) companies in the top of the world

Soo..
    they "opened" their economy

     DEVELOPMENT SHENZHEN

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

SHENZHEN

Shenzhen's open door policy was a success:
  • From fishing village to mega city (14 million inhabitants)
  • Plenty of cheap labor for simple, labor-intensive products (clothing, toys, etc.)
  • Establishment of large multinational companies (multinationals)

Shenzhen designated in 1980 as the first Special Economic Zone (SEZ)
area where foreign companies are allowed to establish themselves freely and pay little tax.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

HONG KONG

1841 to 1997 --> Colony of England

Semi-autonomous from 1997:
  • Special status: "1 country, 2 systems"
  • Own rules
  • Own independent jurisdiction
  • Own political system

Hong Kong is much freer than China - many rights and freedoms left over from British rule
