Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Lesson plan
  • Look back to §6.7
  • Theory §6.8
  • Homework
  • Exit question

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

§6.7 was about fertilisation.
What is fertilisation?
timer

Slide 4 - Open vraag

Recap §6.7
After pollination:
  • Pollen grains form a pollen tube.
  • To carry the nucleus of the pollen grain to
    the ovaries.
  • Enters the ovules and fertilizes the egg cell.
  • The ovules become seeds, the ovary
    becomes the fruit.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

How many times did this plant get pollinated, and how many seeds will their fruit have?
A
Pollinated: 2 Seeds: 2
B
Pollinated: 5 Seeds: 5
C
Pollinated: 2 Seeds: 5
D
Pollinated: 5 Seeds: 2

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

Lesson objectives
1. After today's lesson you can explain in what ways seeds of plants can be dispersed (relocated).

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Seeds
Seeds are the start of the
life cycle of a plant.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

What did a life cycle of a plant look like? §6.1
timer
2:00
The root grows bigger and the stem starts to grow out of the soil.
The plant grows flowers, fruit and eventually new seeds.
The plant grows out of the seed, root first.
The first leaves start to grow.
The young plant grows and develops more leaves and roots.

Slide 9 - Sleepvraag

Germinating
A seed germinates best when it has no competition for:
  • Water
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Light

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Discuss why plants have to disperse
their seeds to prevent competition.
timer
1:00

Slide 11 - Open vraag

Seed dispersal
Scattering seeds away from the parent plant.
  • Done by the wind.
  • Done by animals.
  • Done by the water.
  • Done by the plant itself.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

By animals
Hooks on the seeds.
  • Hang on to fur.

Get eaten.
  • Did not get digested: poop.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

By the wind
Pepper-pot type.
  • Containers with seeds.

Parachute type.
  • Feathery hairs.

Winged type.
  • Spinning in the wind.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

By water
Seeds fall in the water, water
carries it away.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

By explosion (the plant themselves)
When the seeds are ripened, they will
split open their shell
and 'fly out'.
  • Lots of force, like an
    explosion.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

In what way do these seeds get dispersed?

Slide 17 - Sleepvraag

Homework §6.8
Get started on assignment number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • You can work in pairs, only if you can whisper.

When you're done, you can:
  • Make a glossary or a summary.
  • Practice www.biologiepagina.nl with the dispersal of seeds (Dutch website, but the biology stays the same).

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Checking homework
Forgot to make it?
  • 1 red cross + name is added to spinner
  • 3 red crosses? Detention

You did make it?
  • 1 green cross
  • 3 green crosses? Name is removed
    from spinner

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Did we meet todays goals?
1. Can you explain in what ways seeds of plants can be dispersed (relocated)?

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

Exit ticket: How does spreading pollen
differ from spreading seeds?
